Alaska is the 49th state of the United States, admitted into the union in 1959. It is the largest of all the 50 states in terms of area, and the 49th largest in terms of population. Crime rates in Alaska are very high, with larceny theft having the highest rates, and homicide having the lowest. Alaska is also rife with crimes based on gender inequality - including sexual assault and harassment, and discrimination against women. That being said, Alaska has seen the lowest crime rates in over 40 years, the result of a downward trend that started in 2018.
According to the Alaska State Bar, there are over 2,307 registered resident lawyers in the state. 953 of these are female attorneys. Attorneys work in both the private and the public sector. In addition to individually practicing lawyers and those working in law firms, Alaska has some prominent legal aid organizations. This includes Alaska Legal Services Corporation (which helps low-income citizens requiring legal help), the Alaska Immigration Justice, Alaska Network on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (helping victims of sexual assault and domestic violence), and the Disability Law Center of Alaska.
