Kunal Patel, JD is a former IRS tax specialist and experienced tax lawyer specializing in federal tax controversies for individuals and small businesses; and foreign income and asset reporting for expatriates and foreign nationals.
His career at the IRS provided Kunal with a unique perspective of IRS procedures and policies. There’s a way the IRS should work and the way it actually works. For his clients with tax problems, he fights aggressively to resolve their tax issues. After the IRS, Kunal worked at one of the largest public accounting firms, where he serviced assignees of multinational corporations in the Houston area. He specialized in cross-border transactions for expatriates and foreign nationals. He fully understands the onerous reporting requirements for those with foreign assets – including Passive Foreign Investment Companies, FBAR, and FATCA reporting. He also understands the complexities involved with reporting of global income – determination of resident status, interpreting tax treaties, ECI/FDAP income, and more.
While at KPMG and since starting his own practice, Kunal has resolved hundreds of tax problems, resulting in favorable outcomes including reduction of taxes, removal of tax liens, abatement of penalties, no change examination results, and successful resolution of tax debt issues. He has represented clients with undisclosed offshore accounts through OVDP and streamlined procedures.
Kunal graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, and later from the University of Houston Law Center, where he was invited for membership on the Business and Tax Law Journal.
