South Dakota has about 1,995 actively practicing lawyers, working across a wide range of disciplines and sectors. Many low-cost and pro bono programs are there in the state to help the disadvantaged. The state has a legal help line where people can have their legal queries answered for free. The Dakota Plains Legal Services (DPLS) helps groups with unique needs such as the elderly, the disabled, veterans and native Americans. The DPLS has 5 main offices - one each in Eagle Butte, Sisseton, Mission, Rapid City and Pine Ridge.
