Minnesota is the 32nd state of the United States, admitted into the union in the year 1858. It is the 12th largest of all the 50 states in terms of area, and the 22nd largest in terms of population. The state scores among the lowest in both poverty and crime rate both nationally and in the Midwest - the violent crime rate is about 277 for every 100,000 persons. Murders have noticeably spiked in Minnesota, over 185 homicides were reported in 2020 - a rate much higher than the 117 homicides reported in 2019. Crime is more concentrated towards the urban areas.
