Formally known as the District of Columbia, and informally just as “DC” - Washington, DC is both the capital city and the sole federal district of the United States. Named after George Washington, the US’s first president and one the country’s founding fathers, Washington, DC has a special status - wherein under the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, it is neither part of any state nor can be one itself. It is the only region that has the US Congress' exclusive jurisdiction. Despite its tight security and status as one of the most politically important and most-visited cities in the world, the District of Columbia has a crime rate of 60 per 1,000 people. The most common crimes are homicides, aggravated assaults and assaults with deadly weapons.
