Admitted to the union in 1959, Hawaii is the 50th state of the United States. Famously known for being the only state which is island-based, it is one of the two states with a tropical climate (the other being Florida). Hawaii ranks 40th in terms of population. In general, the state enjoys better conditions - namely a lower poverty rate (the 2nd lowest), as well as a low imprisonment rate (the 10th lowest). Crimes tend to concentrate more in lower socio-economic areas, as well as in and around the capital city of Honolulu.
Hawaii has approximately 5,500 licensed attorneys, and roughly 4,800 of them are present and eligible to practice within the state. A majority of them are based out of Oahu. The Hawaii State Judiciary is the supreme legal body and has six divisions - the Hawaii State Supreme Court (the state's high court), the Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals (the intermediate appellate court), the Hawaii state circuit courts (which holds jurisdiction over criminal cases and civil cases with disputes under-$25,000), the Hawaii State family courts (dealing with all things family law), the Hawaii state district courts, the Hawaii Land Court, and the Hawaii State Tax Appeal Court. The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii is the prime organization for anyone looking for low-cost and/or pro bono assistance.
