New Jersey is the 3rd state of the United States, admitted into the union in the year 1787. It is the 4th smallest of all the 50 states in terms of area, and the 11th largest in terms of population. With a crime rate of 195 per 100,000 people, the state is the only one to have a crime rate lower than 200 outside of the New England region. New Jersey also has one of lowest assault rates in the country. That being said, some areas have an unusually higher crime rate, such as Camden, Asbury Park and Trenton - each of which have a violent crime rate of more than 1,100 per 100,000 people.
